Book Brigade Expands in 2024

Book Brigade Brings Free Books To Hammond and Neighboring Communities

Press Release: Book Brigade 2024 May/September - Released Nov. 21, 2023

The Book Brigade: A Call to Action will return in 2024 with 12 community walks. These walks

will take place in May and September in Hammond and neighboring communities like Whiting,

East Chicago, and Gary. To ensure successful walks BBB4E is looking to partner with local

organizations. BBB4E aims to engage 100 volunteers in these door-to-door free book deliveries.

Book deliveries in 2023 took place around schools and parks, in 2024 we aim to find new ways

to engage communities through these events. For example, working with schools to organize

Book Brigade distribution sites within neighborhoods during after school dismissal. Students and

their families will be able to select free books from red wagons, on their way home from school.

BBB4E is currently accepting donations to purchase new books that address important themes

of kindness, inclusion, creativity and mental health appropriate for multiple ages. Purchasing

books in multiple languages, particularly Spanish, is also a priority.

In summer 2024, we will work with community partners to host a region-wide book drive for new

and used books donations.
